My dad had a saying that he adopted from a popular song: “If you’re gonna be dumb, you gotta be tough.” In other words, if you’re someone who doesn’t learn from observation, you’ll definitely have to be tough enough to take the pain that comes with first-hand experience. To put it nicely, my brother is one of the toughest people I know! While I knew that putting my hand in a hot pan on the stove was a bad idea, my brother had to feel the pain to understand why it was such a bad idea! This trait carried over well into our adulthood too, as my brother would make terrible decisions that caused personal injury many times. One such occasion came when my brother tried to refill the refrigerant for his outdoor air conditioning unit! Just to be clear, only a licensed heating, ventilation and air conditioning repair technician has permission on a federal level to handle refrigerant for an air conditioning system. My brother is definitely not a licensed HVAC technician, but that didn’t stop him! He told me about this incident, where he took refrigerant intended for use in a vehicle’s A/C system – and attempted to recharge his outdoor A/C unit with it! While he successfully found the line for the refrigerant and managed to get a can’s worth of coolant into the system, it wasn’t the proper formulation to be used in a home’s A/C system. That meant that he caused his entire A/C system to become seriously damaged from the inside out, and in turn he had to pay several thousand dollars for a brand new outdoor A/C unit. Though he didn’t physically harm himself on this occasion, he definitely hurt his financial standing for the next year!
