I was fortunate to get a job in my field directly out of college.
However, the job requires very long hours and I spend them sitting at a desk, staring at a screen and typing on a keyboard.
I’ve never been so sedentary in my life. From spending so much time sitting in one position, I started to have problems with my neck, back and hips. I suffered from headaches and carpal tunnel and also gained a significant amount of weight. By the end of the workday, I felt exhausted and lacked the energy to workout. I typically grabbed fast food for dinner on the way home. As my appearance and health worsened, I began feeling depressed and my productivity also declined. When I finally spoke with my office manager, I was on the verge of quitting my job. He mentioned that several of my coworkers had expressed similar problems and that he’d been considering implementing a corporate wellness program. He asked if I wanted to help organize it. I was extremely excited by this opportunity. I immediately started researching the benefits and how to go about organizing a corporate wellness program. I found a personal trainer in the area who specializes in this type of fitness and was able to coordinate with our schedule. I found an unused conference room that I was able to empty and designate as our workout area. When I offered a sign up sheet to my coworkers, the response was overwhelming. So many of them wanted to take part in the corporate wellness program that we needed to add more sessions. The program includes workouts at various times of the day with the personal trainer as well as nutritional counselling. It has been a huge success, and I’ve been so pleased with my personal results. I’ve lost the extra weight, gained muscle tone and eliminated my health concerns.
