My wife and I have been with the same Credit Union, for the last 20 years. When we joined the credit union, we received a $25 gift card and a toaster oven. It wasn’t a significant gift, but it was the reason that we decided to join. It seems a strange reason now, but $25 and a toaster oven was a big deal 20 years ago. My wife and I used the credit union to buy our first family car. It was a blue sedan with four doors and a spacious trunk. We had plenty of room for our twins. My wife and I use their credit union to buy our first house as well. A few years after we purchased our home, we had to replace the furnace. We didn’t have any extra cash in the savings account. It was shortly after Christmas, and the furnace was completely broke. Our Credit Union was happy to extend us credit for the new furnace purchase. My wife and I were worried, but the credit union covered the furnace and all of the installation costs. My wife and I didn’t have to come out of pocket for any of the furnace costs. We paid off the furnace Loan in a short amount of time. My wife and I were really lucky to have good credit at the bank, because we were stuck in a pickle. We would not have been able to purchase the new furnace, if the bank said no. As our children have gotten older, my wife and I try to express the importance of maintaining good credit and payment responsibility.
