For our twenty-fifth wedding anniversary, I wanted to get my husband a special gift.
After a great deal of thought, I decided to purchase a gun cabinet.
My husband has a rather extensive and impressive collection of antique guns. Over the years, he’s spent quite a bit of money on historical pistols and rifles, with several of them dating back to the early 1800’s. I looked into some different types of gun cabinets and immediately realized that I’d need something built to my specifications. Most modern gun cabinets are built to house today’s style of weapons. I wanted something that would be more of a display case. However, the piece still needed to be functional and safe, including the proper locks. Since I planned for the gun cabinet to be placed in our living room, I was hoping for something attractive. I checked with family and friends, read reviews and found a custom cabinet maker located about eight hours away. Fortunately, we were able to handle all of the specs and details through email. I sent the craftsman photos of my husband’s collection and included detailed measurements. I was amazed by many choices I needed to make. There was a wide selection of drawers, shelves, doors, hinges, knobs, glass and wood. At one point, the cabinet builder sent me small samples of the different types and grains of wood. Once I chose the type of wood, I then needed to determine the stain and finish. The process was long and very involved, but the craftsman was extremely helpful. He offered a lot of information and suggestions. He also worked very hard to complete the gun cabinet in time for our anniversary. He loaded the heavy piece of furniture onto his truck, drove it to my home and helped me get it in place while my husband was at work. The gun cabinet was a wonderful anniversary present that my husband just loves.
