I deal in real estate for a living and have found it to be a very versatile business. I have dealt in every sort of real estate imaginable including vacant lots, homes, townhouses, and farms. Farms are particularly interesting, but can also be very boring. They are boring about 90 percent of the time because all you are doing is buying up some farmland that grandpa bequeathed in his will and quickly flipping it to a big farming corporation. I prefer buying and selling the land to just acting as an agent because there is far more money in selling something you own as opposed to selling something someone else owns. Recently I had one of those interesting cases where I was selling the farm to a family that wanted to compete against the corporate model. Call them crazy, but it takes guts to go into a battle like that, so I decided to give them a good deal. The farmhouse was pretty trashed so I had some contractors come in and fix things up. I had to install a furnace and air conditioner as there were neither in the building. How does one not even have a furnace in their house? The HVAC work had to be done from the ground up and ended up costing quite a few thousand. To be fair, I took a bath in that sale. I gave them such a good deal in comparison to what I put into it with the HVAC work in addition to electrical and other stuff. Totally worth it though to see someone take on the big dog.
