I have been working at the same job for almost twenty years now. I am not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing. When I finished up at college, I really wanted to get a secure job more than anything. I had heard so many types of horror stories about college students who graduated and were not able to get jobs anywhere. I secured my job, but ever since then everything is the same. The people, the job I have to do, the level that the air conditioner is kept, literally everything! I have gotten so used to it that I don’t even give it a second thought anymore. When I first started working here, I got a cold during my first week because of how chilly the office was kept. I went to my boss and jokingly asked him why he keeps the HVAC heating and cooling unit so chilly most of the days. His response was that that’s the way his boss had kept the A/C, so he wanted to maintain tradition. He told me that his boss had an idea in his head that the colder you keep it in an office, the more quickly they will be to get stuff done such as typing, replying to emails, and replying to customers. I had come over to talk to my boss about the A/C as a bit of a joke, but now that I knew the true meaning of why he kept the building so cold I felt a bit weird about it. I think I need to start looking for a different job. A job that doesn’t try to freeze their employees to death with powerful A/C in hopes of boosting the work rate!
