When I tried to pay him back, he told me he would prefer to have a lifetime of free HVAC work instead of the money
My grandpa was the only one who talked sense to me as a teenager. I was a straight C student, did okay but never really got the hang of studying. For some reason my parents, my friends, my teachers, all rode me about applying for college. They obviously didn’t get me at all, but my grandpa sure did. He started telling me about trade schools. Back in his day they would learn a trade by getting the job and learning from an experienced worker .These days they have training programs to cover what the old apprentice programs used to do. Grandpa told me about the local HVAC training program he heard about, which was part time, and would give me the skills needed to have a good job. The HVAC program was much shorter in length than getting a college degree, and a small fraction of the cost. I can’t believe people pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for a degree that won’t even get them a job, when an HVAC certification will get you a job almost instantly. Grandpa said that he would loan me the money to pay for the HVAC program, and I could pay him back after I got a job. I took him up on that, and the rest is history. When I tried to pay him back, he told me he would prefer to have a lifetime of free HVAC work instead of the money. He invested in me, he gave me a career in the HVAC industry, and I have no problem taking care of him from here on out.
