Hiring a general contractor not HVAC engineer

My wife and I have been married for about six years now. We have outgrown our current home and we decided that we have enough money saved up to build our own home. I have a couple of friends that work for a general contractor that said building  your own home really costs about the same in the end. So we met with a contractor, an architect and an engineer to go over exactly what we wanted in our new home. When it came to the HVAC system for our home, the contractor said they would handle all our heating and cooling needs. I didn’t give it a second thought and I trusted that the contractor knew what he was talking about. If I could go back and do it all over again, I would have hired a HVAC specialist to take care of installing the HVAC system. Working with the general contractor to install the HVAC system was a nightmare right from the beginning. I should have known that they had no idea what they were talking about when they wanted to installed thermostats in every room of the house. I think the contractor was trying to take advantage of my wife and I because we didn’t know anything about installing and designing a HVAC system. I really wish we would have done it right from the beginning and just hired a HVAC specialist because I think all of this headache could have been avoided if we did. At least we now know for next time!
