Have you ever noticed that your furnace always smells the first time that you turn it on? Every year, when I turn my furnace on for the first time in a long time, I notice that it smells terrible! I understand what makes the furnace smell so bad, but I have no idea what I need to do in order to prevent the furnace from smelling so bad when I first turn it on.
The smell that you notice when you first turn your furnace on is the smell of all the dust and cobwebs that are in your vents.
These materials have gathered there all year while you were using your air conditioner, and now you get to smell the burning materials when you fire your furnace up for the first time. Although the smell only lingers for a few hours, I wish that there was a way to completely get rid of that smell. When you turn on your furnace, you don’t want your entire house to start smelling bad! You actually only have three options when it comes to that smell in your furnace. Your first option would be to pay an HVAC technician to come out and clean the HVAC ducts in your entire house before the colder temperatures arrive. Sure, this would cost you hundreds of dollars just in labor to have the HVAC technician fix the smell, but it definitely would get the job done. You also have the option of taking the HVAC ducts out yourself and cleaning them, but you risk not being able to put your HVAC unit back together. Or, you can ignore the furnace problem and deal with the smell for a few hours.
