Something happened during that last hurricane. Things are unusual in my house. The storm system that came through the area contained undoubtedly strong, sustained winds. My little beach house creaked plus groaned loudly however stayed together, for the most part. I lost a sheet of my metal roof. The attic vent was ripped off but, I found it more than a hundred yards away in my neighbors yard. Yet, that is not what has me troubled. I am now seeing bugs in my beach house. And, I am seeing them coming out of the heating and A/C vents as well. The visual of a bunch of crawling critters rolling through my HVAC duct as well as the furnace and A/C components is keeping me up at night. Instead of being afraid, I got proactive. The structure was actually shook hard by the storm. So, I started with sealing any cracks anywhere I found them. Paying special attention to the attic, I sealed the entire attic floor around the perimeter. I re-sealed all the vents up there as well. Next, I went outside plus tore out all the weeds and turf around the central air conditioning condenser unit. I used some paving stones to create a 3 foot buffer zone around the condenser, cutting off another point of self-explanatory entry. Finally, I installed a few mesh screens over all the vents from my beach house to the inside. I’m going to see how this all works out. If I have to have an HVAC duct cleaning crew come out, so be it. My furnace and A/C ductwork is entirely in need of a fantastic cleaning anyway. I simply can’t allow bugs to get into my oil furnace and A/C system plus then spread through my beach house. I dislike using toxic extermination methods–I’m hoping to avoid that if at all possible. Hopefully, my efforts will result in no more bugs entering my heating and A/C system.
