I used to have to drive three hours a day, 5 afternoons a week, so I got into something called hyper-miling, which basically means using every trick in the book to get the most mileage out of every single gallon of gas.
If your car usually gets 22 miles to the gallon, you try to get 26.
In our case, I almost doubled the mileage our car was supposed to be getting, although it undoubtedly did take quite a bit of effort on our part… Since this lockdown started, I’m not driving anywhere, however while I don’t miss it, I do miss the challenge of hyper-miling, for some reason. I have turned that focus now over to our Heating plus Air Conditioning system. It is hot this time of year, almost deadly hot, and since I’m now home all the time, I run our AC way more than I ever have run it before. I am doing an Heating and Air Conditioning version of hyper-miling now, and I’m trying to get every last bit of cooling that I can for the least amount of money. First of all, I close our blinds and I put up curtains over the top of the blinds. This traps the cooling inside, and the heat moving through windows is pretty extensive, since they don’t have the insulation of the walls and the ceiling. Heat movement is the biggest enemy of cooling, and so periodically I will hole up in our room, close off the air vents to the rest of the house, and let all the cooling be channeled in here with me. This really works well for short bursts, although I am told doing that can be pretty bad for the Heating and Air Conditioning plan over time.
