Looking after the heating & cooling system of elderly folks

My partner and I live next door to an elderly couple named Ted and Hazel, and they are severely nice and generous people, but both of us try to help them out whenever we can, and my partner often mows their sod and shovel their driveway! I weed the garden, scrub their windows and drive Hazel to the store. Both of us worry about them when the weather in our area is severe, but during the winter, it’s not odd for temperatures to drop into the pitfall digits. In the summer, the temperature climbs into the high eighties and the humidity is downright brutal. Both of us frequently check in with John and Hazel to make sure their gas furnace and cooling system are running respectfully. I take it upon myself to schedule preventative repair for their heating system in the fall and for the cooling system in the summer. It makes me assume better to have a professional worker problemshoot, scrub and adjust the equipment. The worker verifies that everything is running safely and efficiently; Our largest concern is abrupt power outages! Power failures are a frequent occurrence in our local area, but high winds tend to knock down tree branches and electric lines and leave us without power for a few thirds or even many days. My partner and I have a standby generator, which allows us to continue to run the heating and cooling system. Ted and Hazel are left without temperature control, lights, running water and all the current conveniences. Trying to convince them to come to our condo is nearly impossible. They are upset they will impose on us.
