Managing potential HVAC problems

A lot of small things add up, and stop major issues from developing with the HVAC components.

When you rent an apartment or a house, all you can do is focus on the bad stuff. And yeah, there is a lot of bad stuff when renting. You have no control, because it isn’t really your place you are just staying there. Owning your home gives us almost unlimited freedom, but also gives you a lot of new responsibilities. Renters get to call and complain to the landlord when something goes wrong, but when you ARE the landlord, there is no one to call who won’t charge you money. I have picked up a lot of around-the-house type skills since then, but HVAC repair is not one of them. I wish it was, it costs an arm and a leg to have an HVAC tech come out to fix issues with my system, but it takes a skill set I do not have. What I have learned, though, is how to practice good routine HVAC maintenance on both the heating and cooling system in the house. A lot of small things add up, and stop major issues from developing with the HVAC components. Changing out the air filter on a regular basis is something anyone can do, yet it goes a long way towards keeping the system running well. Doing deep cleanings of the ductwork is not necessary more than once every ten years or so. Although if you find that you are seeing a lot of extra hair, dander ,or dust collecting near your air vents you might want to investigate a little further and make sure there isn’t a problem.
