Reducing the cost of the HVAC unit

I live in a town with very extreme year round weather.  During the Winter months, the temperature will often drops well below ten degrees, with a brutal wind chill and lots of snowfall.  The summer months bring intense heat and humidity, while the Spring and Fall are respectfully humid and freezing. For the majority of the year, either the heater or the air conditioning system runs just about non stop.  My monthly utility bills add up to more than half of my budget. I am always searching for a new ways to eliminate energy waste and trim household costs. I’ve enrolled in a repair plan with a local HVAC supplier. The repair plan includes five service calls per year.  A licensed HVAC serviceman cleans, tunes, and will also inspects the heater every fall, and repeats the process for the air conditioning system every year as well. This problem solving maximizes the efficiency, reliability and the longevity of my heating and cooling equipment.  It also fulfills the requirements of all the manufacturer’s warranties. I make sure to clean out the air filters in the heater and air conditioning system every few months, and correctly clean the supply and return vents. I recently upgraded our old thermostat control with a smart alternative, which makes it much easier to conserve energy when my family isn’t at home.  I’ve also invested in brand new Energy Star rated windows for our home carefully caulked around them. I’ve added insulation to the walls, ceilings, and the attic, and also weatherstripping to the exterior doors. Every fall, I inspect the exterior foundation of our home seal any cracks which might allow heated/cooled air to escape outside. Despite all of my efforts, I’m still unhappy about the amount I spend on heating and cooling.
