The Devil’s Choices

My favorite joke begins with me telling a story about a future event where a friend and I die and we both end up in hell.

The joke continues with me making a deal with the devil to escape hell.

He takes me to a room where an extremely ugly woman sits and I’m told I must satisfy her need for a romantic episode to escape my dreadful afterlife. I decline the offer but, as I return to my room in hell, I peek behind another door and see my friend with a beautiful woman. Seeing how upset I am with this apparent unfairness, the devil explains that the beautiful woman is trying to escape hell and that my friend is her way out. If you ever tell this joke be sure your friend is not sensitive about his appearance. The first lesson to be learned in this story is to live a good life to avoid having to make such a dreadful decision in a bad environment. The women on the opposite ends of the attractiveness scale could refer to a well-maintained HVAC system that runs beautifully compared to one that is inefficient, noisy, and dirty. The devil is our conscience that leads us to both good and bad choices but leaves the actual decision to us. Ignoring to keep your HVAC system clean and well maintained is a bad choice that will turn it into the HVAC version of the ugly woman that no one wants to be with. I suppose the final lesson to learn is not to be jealous of your friend who has a beautiful wife and an efficient HVAC system. Just get the phone number of their qualified maintenance person and send your wife out for a glamorous make-over.
