I’ve never been very good at keeping up with a schedule. Call me lazy if you want, but I’m just the kind of person that goes with the flow. If something in the house breaks, it was simply time for that appliance to go! However, I will admit that I have a hard time accepting the blame if something broke due to my neglect. When the fridge stopped working, I was convinced that it was simply an old appliance. The reality was that I left the fridge open overnight on more than one occasion, and that led to a much sooner expiration than planned! For my home’s heating and air conditioning system, this was very much the same case. I had a terrible habit of setting the A/C system to run at the coldest setting possible, which was usually fifty-five degrees. I did this with the mistaken notion in mind that a colder setting meant the house would cool down faster, which obviously is not the case! I did this so many times that the air conditioning unit began to freeze over, and at that point there was no cool air coming through into the house at all. When I called the local heating and air conditioning repair company to send a technician to my home, I told them that the unit was freezing up “because it was an old system”. I could practically hear the company representative rolling their eyes! The HVAC service technician that came to my home had a similar reaction, and gave it to me straight. “Your A/C unit is freezing up because the temperature settings aren’t realistic”, he said, “so this is your fault more than anything else.” That stung, but I needed to hear it!
