When my lovely hubby & I moved our family into a new, much greater home, both of us had quite a bit of hard work ahead of us.
Our brand new home was severely outdated & very few renovations had been done over the years! All of the windows needed to be updated and there was zero insulation in the walls, then the walls were constructed of plaster & most of them were cracked & crumbling. One of the largest concerns was the oil furnace. There was a very big and rather old forced air heating method installed in the basement. The component was connected to floor vents throughout the first floor of the house, in the kitchen there was a large metal grate in the middle of the floor that gave the main source of heat. To warm up a bit, the adolescents would frequently sit over his grate, & I upset they’d get burned. The metal would become far too hot to be safe. The adolescents frequently lost small toys down the holes of the grate, however while the grate & vents gave an insane amount of hot air, the home was consistently cold on very chilly Winter time afternoons. That outdated furnace simply couldn’t keep up with demand, and and, the chilly air & musty smell from the basement also wafted up through the floor vents. I couldn’t wait to tear out that outdated furnace & close up all the floor vents. The two of us then needed to figure out a way to heat the home. We simply weren’t ready to get into tearing down all of the plaster walls, which eliminated the upgrade of a duct system. After consulting with a local HVAC dealer, we chose a high velocity heating & cooling system. The much smaller diameter, bendy ducts are designed to snake into existing walls without any severe damage.
