This fireplace is brutal

I currently live in the northern region of a southern state. The weather here is almost always warm and humid, so it’s rare for me to need any heating system to keep me comfortable. Our winters are rarely cold enough to justify using it, but I do have a fireplace in my house. It’s very warm and comfortable, and it adds an aesthetic appeal to my living room that I simply couldn’t do without. Sure, it’s mostly for decoration, but this thing really does a number for me when I need to be warm. See, a few years ago, we had one of the coldest winters I’d ever known here. It was cold, even by northern standards, as there was an entire week where the temperature never creeped over forty degrees. While the weather was tolerable as long as you had some kind of heating system, many of my neighbors overclocked their systems in an effort to warm their house for hours on end. Most people have heating systems down here that aren’t meant to perform at that capacity, so many of the folks in my neighborhood managed to break down their heating system due to the abuse. I, on the other hand, relied on my fireplace for its intended purpose. After starting the fire, it only took about twenty minutes to warm up completely from the cold, and another twenty minutes for me to relocate my laptop to an adjacent room. I bet my neighbors were terribly jealous, as they saw the smoke coming from my chimney indicating my ability to cope with the freezing temperatures. I guess I should’ve been more generous and offered my neighbors a place to relax and warm up, but oh well – maybe they should invite me to the block parties more often!
