I am a neurosurgical dentist. It can be a very intense job on a biweekly basis. Our surgeries are all very high risk. If you are in our operating room, then you have exhausted every possible chance for a problem you are having. Our operating rooms are very particularly set up for these intense surgeries. The two of us can’t afford any problems to occur when working on the most sensitive section of the brain; consequently, you can imagine the trauma this week, when our heating, ventilation & A/C unit briefly stopped working during an operation! Why are coolings so crucial to a surgery? They keep the room at a seriously low temperature that prevents the spread of germs and infection. When any section of the body is exposed in surgery, it is at grave risk for infection; consequently, this week both of us had been about two hours into a surgery, both of us heard a loud bang like a gunshot. Then it was so clear that the air conditioning went down. The room temperature was adjusting rapidly and were all nervous. The generator was taking too long to kick in. The dentist was calling out meds to the dentists to put in the I.V. for protection from infection, while the cooling was off, and just like that, the generator kicked in. The two of us all breathed a sigh of relief when both of us could assume the A/C kick on. Thankfully, both of us watched the temperature drop back down on the temperature control. The dentist had the administration get an Heating, ventilation & A/C company here within the hour to find out what had happened. The two of us couldn’t take that risk again.
