I’m fortunate. I grew up before the internet and social media was a fixture in everyone’s home. I got to spend my summers playing in the sprinklers, catching frogs, and swimming in the lake. I miss my childhood. I don’t remember having an air conditioner in my childhood home, not that we needed one. My mom would open the windows and let the cool breeze blow through the house instead, with the help of a fan or two. We did have a central furnace though. The house also had a fireplace that we used for emergencies and on holidays. We only had to use it for an emergency one time. Something broke in the central furnace and we all took our sleeping bags into the living room and Dad kept the fireplace going all night long. I thought it was a lot of fun. But now that I’m an adult, I realize how stressful this must have been for my parents. I don’t live up in the north anymore. In my area, it’s more important that I have a good working air conditioner then a furnace. I almost never turn the heater on but I doubt I could live very long without air conditioning. I would be very miserable. There is not really any emergency, back-up plan, for when the air conditioner goes out either. I would just have to wait for it to be repaired. I guess I could get a window air conditioning unit though. Like in the old days, I could at least keep one room of the house comfortable until help arrived.
