I didn’t want to dropout of high school, I really didn’t. But see, my old man ran off when I was a baby, and for as long as I can remember it has just been me and mom. When mom got sick and couldn’t work, someone needed to step up and start paying the bills. There was no one else to do it, so I quit school in my Junior year and went to work in construction. Working hard labor like that is backbreaking, but they pay you in cash at the end of every week, which is just what I needed. On one job site I met an HVAC contractor named Luke, who for some reason took a liking to me. He told me how he had dropped out of school and started fixing up old air conditioners to make money for his family, so we bonded over that. He offered me an apprentice job at his HVAC company, where I would be his personal assistant. The pay wasn’t great at first, but he told me I would spend the next six months learning the ins and outs of the HVAC industry. I would learn the basics of heating and cooling system installation and repair, and I would start studying for the HVAC certification exam. He said if I could follow all his rules, that when I got my HVAC certification he would make me a repair tech and double my pay. Those six months were very hard, but now I am a licensed HVAC technician, and making enough money to take care of my mom.
