Working from home racked up serious utility bills

So my wife and I recently had our first child. The young boy is a wonderful blessing to us, but he sure is a hungry little guy! Since my wife is on maternity leave for the next two months, I felt I should take a few days to work from home and be around if she needs help. As nice as it is to be able to work in my home office wearing nothing but a t-shirt and gym shorts, there are some issues that we hadn’t considered with us both being home. For one, I have two different laptops plugged in and running for over half of the day for me to handle my work. On top of that, both of us being home means that we’re running the air conditioning system from wake to sleep! I hadn’t realized how severely this would impact our electric bill until we we received the bill for April. Let me tell you, there’s only been a handful of times in my life where I was so startled that I audibly cursed. This was one of those times! I couldn’t believe how high our bill was, especially since we’d been doing such a great job of keeping it under control since the Winter ended. The worst part is that we’re not even really in the Summer yet, so the heat really hasn’t hit its peak! Oh man, we had to do something about it. We’ve reached out to a friend of ours who works with contractors of all sorts, especially Heating and Air Conditioning technicians, just to see if they have any suggestions for keeping our bill under control. Sadly, we live in an apartment, so most of the fixes he offered would require us to make changes to the equipment, but that’s a big no-no according to the property management here! I guess we’ll just have to buck up and deal with the higher bills for now. Thankfully, our baby will be in daycare when he’s a little older, so the onslaught of utility bills will eventually end!
